Introduction

In communities impacted by displacement and economic challenges, women and girls often bear the burden of the hardship. Poor nutrition, limited access to education, and financial instability create a cycle of poverty that’s hard to break. Recognizing this, the Unified Culture Promotion Foundation (UNICPF), in collaboration with GHIV Africa, has launched the 2024/2025 Nutrition and Empowerment Project. This initiative is designed to address the critical nutrition and empowerment needs of women and girls in both host communities (HC) and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Makurdi, Benue State.

Why This Initiative Matters:

In regions like Makurdi, where access to food security, agricultural knowledge, and economic opportunities can be scarce, it’s essential to empower women with the skills and tools they need to thrive. This project is not just about providing immediate relief but about creating sustainable pathways for women to improve their nutrition, increase their incomes, and contribute to the well-being of their communities.

By equipping women and girls with knowledge in agriculture, financial literacy, and cooperative formation, we are empowering them to take charge of their futures, helping to break the cycle of poverty, and fostering a stronger, more resilient community.

Empowerment Training Programs:

  • Good Agricultural Practices (GAP): Women and girls receive training in sustainable farming techniques that contribute directly to improved nutrition while safeguarding the ecosystem. These practices ensure that participants can produce healthy, nutrient-dense foods for their families and communities, fostering long-term food security.

  • Financial Literacy: Our financial literacy training empowers women with essential skills to manage their finances effectively. By understanding how money works, beneficiaries can expand their gardens, save for future needs, and build resilience against economic shocks, giving them the tools they need for sustained financial independence.

  • Cooperative Formation: Women are taught how to form cooperatives, which enable them to pool resources, share knowledge, and access larger markets. Through collective effort, these women can better access finance and opportunities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the path to empowerment.

Key Success Stories:

1.Β  Β Training of Community Nutrition Mobilizers (CNMs)
Our project has successfully trained 10 local women as Community Nutrition Mobilizers (CNMs), equipping them with skills in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Farmers Business School (FBS), and Cooperative Formation. These CNMs are now poised to pass on their knowledge to other women, creating a ripple effect of empowerment throughout the community.

2.Β  Β Thriving Gardens, Thriving Lives
With the guidance and support of the CNMs, our beneficiaries have successfully started growing their own nutrient-rich gardens. These gardens are not only improving household nutrition but are also becoming a source of income, helping families achieve food security while protecting the environment through sustainable agricultural practices.

Looking Ahead:

The UNICPF 2024/2025 Nutrition and Empowerment Project is just the beginning. As we continue to work closely with women and girls in Makurdi, we are laying the foundation for a healthier, more empowered community. By focusing on long-term solutions that combine nutrition, financial stability, and community cooperation, we are building a future where women are equipped to lead their families and communities toward prosperity.

Together, we can create lasting change, one empowered woman at a time.
